Seashore is a basic image editor for Mac OS X 10.3 or later built on Gimp technology. Seashore doesn't aim to do what Gimp does, but provides many basic image editing functions: layers, alpha channel, brushes, gradients and many of the earlier gimp toolset. What's absent is a lot of the extra Gimp effects and some functionality like taking screenshots.

Vertris is a single player Tetris game for Windows and Linux with high quality graphics. Development seems to have started in about 2006 and stopped in 2007. We grabbed the latest .deb file for Ubuntu Linux and it installed without a hitch on our Ubuntu Linux 10.04 system. We also noted that the Windows file was zipped. It will have to be unzipped before running the game file. Game play is fairly rapid, a bit more than some Tetris-clones we've tried.

The Bub's Brothers calls itself a "new striking n-multiplayer crazy clone of the famous Bubble Bobble game!" What we found was something that was very similar to Bubble Bobble with an interesting twist, but we were disappointed with the game's responsiveness to the controls. The Bub's Brothers is available as a download for Windows and Linux through the sourceforge page.

Light Effect

Wallpaper:

This relatively dark wallpaper is a combination of photography and gimp editing. It has kind of an alien-like look to it and I combined it with some blurred purple to give it an Ubuntu-Linux 10.04-ish feel to it.

Xenophage is a former commercial alien fighting-style game by 3DRealms/Apogee that has been released as Freeware. It is NOT free in the Richard M. Stallman "free software" sense, you can't modify or redistribute files as part of your own software, but it is free in the cost sense.

DOSBox is a DOS emulator (both MS and PC-DOS) for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and other UNIX-like operating systems. We tried DOSBox because we wanted to run the 3DRealms/Apogee game Xenophage under Linux (because it blue-screened our Windows partition when we took a screenshot). We found that not only did it run Xenopage, but it seemed to do it better than Windows running Xenopage in its command line mode.

Emilia Pinball is a free software pinball emulator for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Emilia Pinball is an old project with 3D graphics capable of running on a slow machine, apparently even 300MHz will due as long as you have a decent 3D graphics card. We tried the Ubuntu Linux version of Emilia Pinball since as of Ubuntu 10.04 it's still in the Ubuntu repositories and can easily be installed with:

sudo apt-get install pinball
